Emir Sanusi gets UN job amid persecution by Kano government

Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II has been appointed advocate of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) just as the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is persecuting the monarch.

Ganduje has re-opened a financial probe against the emir while also creating four rival emirates to whittle down Sanusi’s influence.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday in New York announced the appointment of His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, as one of his new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Advocates for 2019-2020.

A statement by UN quoted Guterres as saying that the appointment was sequel to the UN Member States agreement to accomplish the SDGs by 2030.

The Advocates are 17 influential public figures from around the world who are tasked by the Secretary-General to promote the Goals, raise awareness with new audiences, maintain global commitment and call for greater ambition and scalable action to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

Sanusi is the only Nigerian on the 17- man Secretary-General’s list of SDGs Advocates co-chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway.

Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901. Colonization lasted until 1960, when an independence movement succeeded in gaining Nigeria its independence. Nigeria  first became a republic in 1963. We are independent at 58 but not free until we: 1.Tell ourselves the truth all the time. 2.Refuse to be treated as objects but subjects 3. Refuse to be taken as electoral stock but national assets. 4. Counter the delusion of our emotions over reason.  Let us felicitate in the joy of being a part of this year’s independence.
